I remembered that I had upgraded libgtk related libraries the day before the issue started.
So, looked into the apt archives, and reverted to the following packages, and the problem has vanished. libgtk2.0-0_2.23.2-1_amd64.deb libgtk2.0-bin_2.23.2-1_all.deb libgtk2.0-common_2.23.2-1_all.deb Downgrading iceweasel itself has not helped; so it is a problem with the libraries. -- Mahesh T.
