So the pause is definitely EDD-related, and it doesn't happen when you boot the squeeze kernel from your hard disk, right? If so, then this looks much like a BIOS oddity. To everybody: I wonder why edd=off isn't the default in the installer, does d-i load the edd module and use the info it provides?
