Let's put this differently: Not every background image can be cropped easily, as you risk cutting through important parts of the image, as seen in #607075. Scaling is not ideal either for certain shapes, e.g. our Debian swirl, as it will distort them. So, either we use images which can be cropped or we need different variants for different aspect ratios. If we prefer the former, we should probably clearly articulate that requirement for future Debian theme designs.
