I have seen this bug in Debian V5.0.5 amd64 and Debian V5.0.6 i386.
I have implemented the work around of putting a symbolic link in to make
the General.ad file appear where the
gnome-settings-daemon wants to find it, i.e.:
$ cd /etc/gnome/config
$ sudo ln -s xrdb/General.ad
This then removes the error message from the users ~/.xsession-errors file.

Tony Fuller
