[snipped for brevity] This is a documented feature. It's controlled by the HashKnownHosts option, which is set by default in /etc/ssh/ssh_config. It looks like the manpage needs to be updated, however, as it incorrectly states that the parameter defaults to "no" (which is the upstream default).
