I was wrong: this still happens in 3.1.7 but only if built against Boost 1.42.0. If I build either 3.1.2 or 3.1.7 against Boost 1.44.0 (I took libboost 1.44.0 from experimental and built packages for squeeze), it works fine. Maybe this is an issue in Boost itself :-?
Also, as you say: it works fine when building in Debug or RelWithDebInfo configurations.
