I had the same problem.
Of course I don't know the config of the original reporter.
But in my case, after putting "set -v" (not -x) in /etc/gdm3/Xsession, I found that my /etc/profile contained the line:
. /etc/bash.bashrc
Which of course is bad practice and not the default, but worked fine, until I switched from kdm to gdm(+dash).
