Nowadays perf (like oprofile) links against libbfd, which again
reminds me that I wish it had a stable ABI[1].

Actually an unstable ABI is fine with me, as long as the ABI version
is not bumped with every release.  For example, I'd be fine with an
unversioned shared library and Breaks for each ABI break, or I'd be
happy to maintain a version number that only increases with
incompatible ABI changes.

Thoughts?  Has this idea been raised upstream before?

[1] I'll file a separate bug to request that perf be linked
statically, but it would be better to avoid that.
