Does this still happen if you launch emacs via "emacs -q", "emacs
--no-site-file", or "emacs -Q"?

If it does, then the problem may be due to something in your .emacs file
(if -q fixes it), or some emacs-related package you've installed (if
--no-site-file or -Q fixes it).
