hi graeme,

could you please provide an strace of the mysqld call?

the easiest way to do so would probably be to put a "set -x" in the
top of /etc/init.d/mysql, and look for the call to mysqld_safe, and then
likewise for within mysqld_safe to find the underlying call to mysqld.

also, though i don't know that it will lead anywhere, fut if you could
also look into the following, it might be helpful:

- is the partition contianing /var/log/mysql full or otherwise not writable?
- is the directory /var/log/mysql writable by the mysql user?
- do you have old_passwords = 1 in /etc/mysql/my.cnf?
