Starting from 5) I can’t reproduce your bug. Only the faulty setting is
not applied.

Same here, the defaults are applied after fixing the file.

Knowing how the defaults are applied, I’m very skeptical about this.
Please send the /var/lib/gdm3/.gconf.mandatory/%gconf-tree.xml file when
you can see the “no options are applied” behavior.

There shouldn’t be anything different than with invoke-rc.d.
