I've had the same problem on a low bandwidth radio connection and the workaround was to use SSL encryption (TCP port #465). From the investigations at that time I saw that the connection was simply dropped after the email client was sending "STARTTLS". Although I had the same message in the logs it might not be the same issue because the messages were not delivered in my case.
