Hello,

would you mind to try with a squeeze beta1 debian-installer?
(which is a preview of the next debian-installer version)
That installer contains the pata_via module, I have double-checked.

If you don't want a new install on your machine now:
There is no need to perform a complete install of debian on the machine,
just start the debian-installer, go through the steps and when you reach
the step for partitioning the harddrive and your disk is detected - yeah,
then everything is fine of course and you can abort the installation at
that point, nothing has been changed on your system until that point.

You could use this image:
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/squeeze_di_beta1/i386/iso-cd/debian-squeeze-di-beta1-i386-netinst.iso

Since the pata_via module is included on that cd, it is expected, that
everything works fine for you with it.
