There are accepted practices. My main worry is "your preferences": these are not "my" preferences, they are those that are set for the software on this system. Maybe not by me..:-) So, I prefer things like "the software's preferences", or just "preferences" alone. "your biggest nightmare" can be turned into "the local admin's biggest nightmare". The main idea is that the person reading the manpage is maybe not the only person administering the machine.
