Hi, I have been using a self-compiled version of OpenMPI 1.4 with threads enabled for some time now and I haven't had any issues so far (even with MPI_THREAD_MULTIPLE). Also the Debian package with activated threading seems to work fine.
The upstream opinion (according to the 1.4 docs at [1]) seems to be that at least MPI_THREAD_MULTIPLE is experimental. I am not sure whether this also applies to the FUNNELED and SERIALIZED versions.
