I'm also able to reproduce this bug. It occurs whenever using a program that passes PDF directly to CUPS for printing. I tried to get some more information, and ran pdftoraster manually as follows:

$ /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftoraster 555 fabbe foobar 1 - mypdf.pdf

Thanks to everyone providing input for this bugreport - and especially to you, Fabian, for isolating the failing command.

I tried running that same command against the new packaging targeted experimental (currently in NEW queue), and apparently the bug is gone.

Please try test that newer ghostscript package and report back if you can confirm that it works properly now.

I have backported it and made it available here:

deb http://debian.jones.dk/ sid printing
deb http://debian.jones.dk/ squeeze printing

You need only add one of the lines - the one matching your system. The backports are compiled for i386 and amd64.

Kind regards, and thanks again to all for your valuable help,

 - Jonas
