Now I found that update-manager has included my libsane and sane-utils packages with a previous upgrade breaking my scanner support (due to bug #597922 I had to install from http://snapshot.debian.org/package/sane-backends/1.0.20-14/#libsane_1.0.20-14:2b:b1 ). - Update manager updated all, but (of course?) left the lock. I didn't even realise this until I tried to scan something.
I now consider this bug a grave one as it can actually break functionality. Consider the worst case where for some reason a core part of the system has to be locked (due to hardware compatibility issues) but is updated to a new version by update-manager.
