I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. To make things clearer, this was a fresh, uncustomized install of exmh on a machine that did not have sound. As near as I can tell, the exmh package simply assumed I had sound. I've since customized exmh on this machine, and I'm not really in the mood to nuke it so I can recreate this bug. When I get the time, I'll do a fresh debian install on another machine (or bochs) and see if this error gets reproduced.
