Hi, JFTR: I also got hit by this issue. Off the top of my head I'd say it might be simply because udev must reload its configuration on postinst before 'invoke-rc.d fuse start' is called. Maybe there's a reason why dh_installudev doesn't automatically run 'invoke-rc.d udev reload'? There doesn't seem to be a dpkg-trigger for it either (which I guess would actually be the most elegant solution, unless I'm overseeing something obvious...)
