If I purge tightvncserver and install vnc4server, I no longer see the problem. Interesting. So my immediate problem is solved, but I still don't know whether the bug is with tightvncserver or xrdp given that I don't have a problem when I just use a vnc client to attach to tightvncserver. But at least I have a usable xrdp configuration now. Thanks! I'll leave it to your discretion as to whether to pursue this further or whether to reassign or pass to upstream.
