Well, it's not specific to "XDG". I think it should be called MAILER. According to this page, it already exists: http://catb.org/~esr/BROWSER/ but there is no description of it. I wonder if the X issue can be solved similarly to BROWSER. I'm not even sure how it's solved with BROWSER.
