I've ran into this during an upgrade of Ubuntu Hardy to Debian testing. Yes, this is not supported, but this might indicate a problem though.
Ubuntu was hit by the same bug for Hardy => Intrepid, see https://launchpad.net/bugs/234345. According to Michael Vogt this is related to glibc [1].
