Package: udev
Version: 163-1
Severity: important

When I upgrade udev from 0.125-7+lenny3 to 163 on my system,
after reboot, X doesn't work (I don't use a display manager, I use startx)
I get a mouse cursor that moves, a black background (I don't usually have a
black background), some video artifacts at the top of the screen,
and the system is unresponsive to mouseclicks and most keyboard activity.
The Caps-lock key toggles the LED until I do Ctrl-Alt-Backspace (which
doesn't change the screen), and after that, caps-lock key has no further
effect. I power-cycle to recover. I haven't checked if the system can be
accessed remotely when this happens.

With 0.125-7+lenny3, I get the expected behavior: no windows open
automatically when I start X, but the root menu functions to start apps.

Some things I think may be relevant:
the laptop has a nvidia chipset
I have not downloaded or installed any non-open-source or non-free
video drivers
I have no packages with "nvidia" in the name installed, just
xserver-xorg-video-nv
I am willing to install packages from debian/non-free as needed.
With 163-1, the console switches from standard VGA to high-res framebuffer
mode during the bootup
There is no video-mode switch with 0.125-7+lenny3
This problem happens with both a 2.6.32-5 squeeze kernel, and a
2.6.32-bpo.5 backports.org kernel
This problem also happens with udev 160-1 found in testing
