Package: linux-image-amd64 Version: 2.6.32+23 Severity: important --- Please enter the report below this line. --- When plugging an external HDD over USB (WD My Passport SE model) this kernel bug occurs. The first time this occured, in a matter of seconds, hundreds of syslogd processes are started and they end up trashing the system. At the second time I immediatly hasted myself to killall syslogd and the system kept running fine. On the third time I just kept an eye for any HDD trashing before I issued killall, but nothing happened.
I'm not sure if this is relevant, but this WD My Passport SE drive has the Smartware partition "virus" (ie, the HDD has a virtual cd drive built into either the firmware or the GPT -- either a DCO or HPA partition), but it was disabled using WD software in windows. I have another drive like that (same manufacturer, same model) and nothing ever happened; although I haven't really used that drive much. After this kernel bug happens I'm unable to plug in any other USB devices -- I tried both USB storage and a webcam. Nothing shows up in dmesg and /proc/partitions freezes in time. Hoping for a lucky shot, I tried to modprobe -r ses, but modprobe just freezes and it becomes impossible to kill that process. Finding a workaround for this bug would be nice, something that wouldn't force me to have to reboot the system just to have USB devices working again. Thanks. dmesg log from 2nd crash: ============================= [24081.856018] usb 4-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 [24081.989144] usb 4-2: New USB device found, idVendor=1058, idProduct=070a [24081.989149] usb 4-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 [24081.989153] usb 4-2: Product: My Passport 070A [24081.989155] usb 4-2: Manufacturer: Western Digital [24081.989158] usb 4-2: SerialNumber: ****************** [24081.989273] usb 4-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice [24081.990177] scsi10 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices [24081.990320] usb-storage: device found at 5 [24081.990323] usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning [24086.988168] usb-storage: device scan complete [24086.990285] scsi 10:0:0:0: Direct-Access WD My Passport 070A 2010 PQ: 0 ANSI: 4 [24086.992281] scsi 10:0:0:1: Enclosure WD SES Device 2010 PQ: 0 ANSI: 4 [24086.993094] sd 10:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg3 type 0 [24086.993290] ses 10:0:0:1: Attached Enclosure device [24086.993447] ses 10:0:0:1: Attached scsi generic sg4 type 13 [24086.996136] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdc] 1463775232 512-byte logical blocks: (749 GB/697 GiB) [24086.999139] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdc] Write Protect is off [24086.999142] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdc] Mode Sense: 2b 00 10 08 [24086.999144] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdc] Assuming drive cache: write through [24087.004638] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdc] Assuming drive cache: write through [24087.004642] sdc: sdc1 [24087.052271] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdc] Assuming drive cache: write through [24087.052276] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdc] Attached SCSI disk [24087.057181] BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000000000000008 [24087.057186] IP: [<ffffffffa015d5cc>] ses_enclosure_data_process+0x1c3/0x2a1 [ses] [24087.057193] PGD 0 [24087.057195] Oops: 0002 [#1] SMP [24087.057198] last sysfs file: /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.7/usb4/4-2/4-2:1.0/uevent [24087.057201] CPU 0 [24087.057203] Modules linked in: ses enclosure usb_storage ipt_MASQUERADE iptable_nat nf_nat binfmt_misc ppdev lp sco bridge stp bnep rfcomm l2cap crc16 bluetooth rfkill vmnet parport_pc parport vmblock vsock vmci vmmon acpi_cpufreq cpufreq_powersave cpufreq_stats cpufreq_userspace cpufreq_conservative xt_limit xt_tcpudp nf_conntrack_ipv4 nf_defrag_ipv4 xt_state nf_conntrack iptable_filter ip_tables x_tables fuse dm_snapshot dm_mirror dm_region_hash dm_log dm_mod hwmon_vid coretemp adt7473 nvidia(P) firewire_sbp2 loop snd_hda_codec_analog snd_hda_intel snd_hda_codec snd_hwdep snd_pcm_oss snd_mixer_oss snd_pcm snd_seq_midi snd_rawmidi snd_seq_midi_event snd_seq snd_timer snd_seq_device asus_atk0110 snd processor serio_raw i2c_i801 soundcore pcspkr psmouse i2c_core snd_page_alloc evdev usbhid hid ext3 jbd mbcache sg sr_mod cdrom sd_mod crc_t10dif ide_pci_generic ide_core ata_generic ata_piix pata_jmicron ahci skge ehci_hcd uhci_hcd firewire_ohci firewire_core crc_itu_t libata button floppy intel_agp agpgart sky2 scsi_mod usbcore nls_base thermal fan thermal_sys [last unloaded: scsi_wait_scan] [24087.057282] Pid: 18387, comm: scsi_scan_10 Tainted: P 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 #1 System Product Name [24087.057284] RIP: 0010:[<ffffffffa015d5cc>] [<ffffffffa015d5cc>] ses_enclosure_data_process+0x1c3/0x2a1 [ses] [24087.057289] RSP: 0018:ffff8801afe6bd30 EFLAGS: 00010282 [24087.057292] RAX: ffff8801100a2e28 RBX: 0000000000000000 RCX: ffff8801100a2c00 [24087.057294] RDX: ffff8801af94f968 RSI: 0000000000000073 RDI: 0000000000000000 [24087.057297] RBP: 0000000000000001 R08: ffffffff814517a8 R09: ffff880006e155c0 [24087.057299] R10: ffff8801b2dd8a80 R11: ffff8801bd51e690 R12: ffff8801af94fbc8 [24087.057302] R13: ffff8801af94fcb8 R14: ffff8801af94f974 R15: 0000000000006976 [24087.057305] FS: 0000000000000000(0000) GS:ffff880006e00000(0000) knlGS:0000000000000000 [24087.057308] CS: 0010 DS: 0018 ES: 0018 CR0: 000000008005003b [24087.057310] CR2: 0000000000000008 CR3: 0000000001001000 CR4: 00000000000006f0 [24087.057312] DR0: 0000000000000000 DR1: 0000000000000000 DR2: 0000000000000000 [24087.057315] DR3: 0000000000000000 DR6: 00000000ffff0ff0 DR7: 0000000000000400 [24087.057318] Process scsi_scan_10 (pid: 18387, threadinfo ffff8801afe6a000, task ffff8801b1d6dbd0) [24087.057320] Stack: [24087.057321] 0000000000000000 ffff8801af94fcbc ffff8801af94fb00 0000000000000aa0 [24087.057325] <0> ffff8801100a2c00 0000000063351691 ffff8801b035db20 ffff8801b03bc000 [24087.057329] <0> ffff8801100a2c00 ffff8801b0016800 ffff8801b0015800 ffff8801b035db20 [24087.057334] Call Trace: [24087.057338] [<ffffffffa015d6f2>] ?
