Have you tried the latest driver on freedesktop? Just as Martin wrote,
I committed a patch(that add an entry of 1024x600 for panel) that can support
1024x600 which will give you the whole screen.
That patch has been merged into the Debian package 2.11.9-5

Upgraded yesterday to 2.11.9-5, no change:
=> video still disapear at boot, either with or without an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file
=> With and only with xorg.conf, I can get 800x480 resolution if and only if
I provide a convenient "PanelMode" line. With this line I can choose between 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480 and 800x480 ; without I loose the 800x480. Note any 800x480 pvt tool generated modeline is discarded, and the one I get is computed from PanelMode xxxxx device option (see the xorg.conf already posted for the line).

Only the first PanelMode options is taken,
Trying

Option "PanelMode" "48960 1024 1064 1168 1312 600 601 604 622"

Gives me a 1024x600 resolution, but out from the screen about 30% (right and
down directions)

after further readings, it seems syntax is :

"PanelMode" "CLOCK hactive hsyncstart hsyncend htotal vactive vstart vsend
vototal"

The functional (but video problem at boot time) "copied from ternet" 800x480
PanelMode line is:
Option "PanelMode" "33450 800 840 968 1056 480 490 492 525"

(Note I cannot access video modes in bios setup (not in any submenu of "F2", I
had try other keys without success))

If I use cvt generated Modelines to fill panelmode (with dot clock as integer),
I get systematically the same problem
excepted for 800x480:

Option "PanelMode" "33250 800 832 904 1008 480 483 493 503"
=> works fine with 70Hz screen refresh.
=> Video still disappears after several seconds at boot.

Conclusions:

=> I cannot get 1024x600 fit screen, and it is not auto-configurated (still needs PanelMode option). trying vtotal and htotal shorters from xvidtune in PanelMode gives me no result. Any clue?

=> 800x480 is supported through PanelMode geode driver option

=> I still have video disappearing (stripes) problem at boot: It may be a hardware failure on my computer item, not to the model (hercules EC-800-H20G/S). Does anyone have the same problem with this computer reference?
