Please run strace -f mozilla-thunderbird and attach the output. Anything that is special about your setup? What extensions are installed? Is this problem profile related? Does thunderbird still fail to start with a fresh profile (e.g. with a test unix account)? If a new account works, please backup your current profile directory ($HOME/.mozilla-thunderbird) before we can go ahead.
