Probably not exactly what you mean, but have you tried
--simplify-by-decoration?

(In the GUI, that option can be set from the "Edit view" dialog:

 View name [ Simplified              ] [X] Remember this view
 ...
 Miscellaneous options:
 [ ] Strictly show by date      [ ] Mark branch sides
