Yes, it worked. I had seen shorewall-common is a transitional package ,
but confused the messages apt-get gave me about shorewall
not being needed anymore with a warning it was going to be removed.
And then I stopped the uninstallation.

Removing shorewall-common with --purge and marking shorewall
as manually  installed solved all the issues.
