What command line do you use? Can you put the offending package online so that we can try to reproduce the problem? I'm afraid there's something fishy because I don't see where dpkg-name would be called when you run dpkg-scanpackages... Can you paste the output of "dpkg-deb -I squeeze/unionmount/linux-image-2.6.35-um-sl-i686+_2.6.35-um-sl-i686+-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb control" ? (adjust the path as necessary) BTW, you kernel is amd64 so if you use the "-a i386" option then it will be skipped and it's normal. And the package name contains a "+" which is quite uncommon.
