why is this file included at all?
libao has a nice way to select a working backend at runtime. why is it
forced to use some backend by default?

As far as I can see the file does not exist in upstream trunk.
The file was added to debian/ at rev 1842 which was version 0.8.0-1 with
no changelog entry.

maybe the file should be removed completly.
