hmm, there might be something else broken. When I kill xmonad and start metacity, I still see now workspaces. Moreover, when I open the preferences window of the workspace switcher, I see the workspace number and names as configured by xmonad. And last but not least, the window switcher lists all my workspaces with correct names and windows on them. So this might potentially be unrelated to xmonad... Ah, interesting: When I move the panel from the left edge to the top edge, the workspaces become visibile. When I move the panel back to the left edge, they stay visible, but are disformed: The workspace switcher is as wide as my panel (32px), as high as it was when the panel was horizontal (also 32px) and the individual workspaces are arranged horizontally as very thin vertical bars. Killing gnome-panel goes back to a single black dot. Can you check if the problem occurs for you with a vertical panel?
