'cuz of above 2 lines, and 'cuz appletviewer mindterm.html worked fine even on (this) Sarge system. Anyway, seems last bunch of upgrades since then made the job, ie trying now same mindterm URLs on same system, which is kept fairly in apt-sync, seems to work. Tried FF and M, open/close/reload, local/remote URL - seems OK.
