Thanks for your response. It's nice to get a set of personalised tips for how to make it do what I want, but really I was just trying to help improve the software to save the next person the hassle :-). As I say, the dpkg-divert sledgehammer has solved the problem for me in etch. Is the procedure you suggested in your previous mail documented in the squeeze manpage for xorg.conf ? In lenny's xorg.conf(5) the description in the section on module loading is rather vague, and the AutoAddDevices option isn't even mentioned. If disabling a driver module in the Modules section doesn't work perhaps there should be a comment in the manpage which explains how to control the loading of driver modules.
