I have a similar problem. I don't see the amarok tray icon when I run amarok
over ssh. I see the question mark icon. When I run amarok normally (not over
ssh), I do get the amarok icon. I tried the suggestions presented above and
they didn't solve the problem:

ls -l /usr/share/kde4/apps/amarok/icons/hicolor/*/actions/collection-
amarok.png
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 846 May 27 20:37
/usr/share/kde4/apps/amarok/icons/hicolor/16x16/actions/collection-amarok.png
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1280 May 27 20:37
/usr/share/kde4/apps/amarok/icons/hicolor/22x22/actions/collection-amarok.png
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2122 May 27 20:37
/usr/share/kde4/apps/amarok/icons/hicolor/32x32/actions/collection-amarok.png
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4497 May 27 20:37
/usr/share/kde4/apps/amarok/icons/hicolor/48x48/actions/collection-amarok.png

I run Amarok 2.3.1. on Squeeze.
