On my i386 (actually i686) system, pax seemed to be showing directories
with size 2^33 (8589934592) and was adding 2^32 (4294967296) to the size
of files.

This bus has knock-on effects for amavisd, and causes it to treat an
email containing a (possibly compressed) tar archive as a mail bomb,
issuing a warning like this:

WARNING: NOT CHECKED FOR VIRUSES (mail bomb?):
  Exceeded storage quota 183074000 bytes by do_pax...
