No it doesn't work around. I still have the issue on both setups (the one with 
LXDE, as well as the one on KDE)

in xorg.conf I added these lines

Section "Device"
        Option     "RenderAccel"                "off"

        Identifier  "Card0"
        Driver      "radeon"
        VendorName  "ATI Technologies Inc"
        BoardName   "Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]"
        BusID       "PCI:1:0:0"

Xorg.0.log says (see attachement for full log)
