I don't see how this could break applications. The disadvantage of a per-source default pin priority (in contrast to NotAutomaticButUpdates) is the "pin war potential" (see other mails in this bug report). I had the same doubts as David Kalnischkies has about this already years ago, but did not mention it in the bug since there did not seem to be any interest to fix this bug and thus no need for such implementation details.
