Indeed, the problem disappears if I add "radeon" in /etc/modules. However, I really can't remember doing any manual configuration of X/KMS. In #debian-x, someone suggested that the problem may lie in udev, failing to load "radeon" in time. I hope I'll find the time to try from scratch in a new Debian installation.
