It is an error message that occurs on some hardware when libasound2 fails to initialize the hardware. From the upstream commit logs I understand that upstream themselves cannot really reproduce this probe error themselves, but users report this to be fixed in the next alsa-lib release. Moreover, the easy workaround is to the pulseaudio output module.
Maybe the Debian alsa maintainers can be convinced to backport the relevant changes from 1.0.23-2-g8d80d5f to the 1.0.23 package so that we can make VLc depend on this specific version.
