Just verifying if I still get problems, it is indeed the case that
gs -sDEVICE=x11 -dTextAlphaBits=4 -dGraphicsAlphaBits=2 \
-dMaxBitmap=10000000 -dNOPLATFONTS wikipedia-witt-vector.pdf
Doesn't work. :-(

I am still under the same impression here. BTW, this is:
* ghostscript 8.71~dfsg2-6
* amd64
* with the attached file
It would be nice if you could confirm that you see the bug.
