My Laptop shows a very similar behaviour It has 2x500G mirrored, two partitions set up md0 acts as /boot md1 is a encrypted lvm, which houses all other FS including root and swap. While upgrading I had the question which arrays need starting at boot time. I answered this with the default: All
Now I get the same message about volume group not found before boot. after that there are the said /sys/devices/virtual/block/md0 (number) /sys/devices/virtual/block/md1 (number) and eventually I am asked for the disk password. after I endtered the password, the system seems to do nothing, but flickers the disk.
