That probably means that xdg-open is using Gnome's default browser. Is
the environment variable GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID set?

If it is, then you probably need to run
gnome-default-applications-properties and set the correct browser. The
default browser might have been set to an old .desktop file with the
incorrect path.
