Hello,

I wanted to try Debian GNU/Hurd and so I installed crosshurd.

BTW, I found IMHO a very useful Debian-related HowTo at [1], which is
not mentioned in the README.gnu. Maybe could it be added?

Here what I did:

1) create space for a new 1GB partition (with resize2fs and fdisk, as
   parted cannot resize ext3, see bug #323438)

2) mke2fs -O sparse_super -o hurd /dev/hda10

3) removed the ftp.gnuab.org entry in /etc/crosshurd/sources.list/gnu
   (I cannot resolve ftp.gnuab.org neither gnuab.org)

Here the crosshurd output error:
=====
dpkg-architecture: warning: Specified GNU system type i486-gnu does
not match gcc system type i486-linux-gnu.

Package slang1 is not available, but is referred to by another
package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
  libslang1
E: Package slang1 has no installation candidate
Failed to download the .deb's.

So, as in unstable libslang1 replaced slang1, I modified
/etc/crosshurd/packages/common to reflect it, bu I got more errors:
=====
gismo:/home/luca# crosshurd

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  debianutils: PreDepends: coreutils (>= 4.5.8-1) but 4.5.3-1 is to be
  installed
  inetutils-ping: Depends: netbase but it is not going to be installed
  inetutils-syslogd: Depends: netbase but it is not going to be
  installed
  util-linux: PreDepends: slang1a-utf8 (> 1.4.4-7.1)

=====

- - debianutils:
  Following bug #285123, I dropped my /etc/apt/apt.conf and retried,
  but the error remains. Indeed, debianutils_2.13.2_hurd-i386 depends
  on coreutils (>= 4.5.8-1) (while coreutils_4.5.3-1_hurd-i386).

- - ineutils-ping and inetutils-syslogd:
  netbase depends on ifupdown (not installable for hurd-i386), so
  adding netbase to /etc/crosshurd/packages/common is a no way.

- - util-linux:
  util-linux_2.12-3_hurd-i386 stills pre-depends on slang1a-utf8,
  while the latest 2.12p-5_i386 pre-depends on libslang2.

So, I cannot install Debian GNU/Hurd via crosshurd :-(

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca
