After update, following errors are logged from /etc/init.d/mysql during
start:

unknown variable 'old_passwords=1'
Aug 16 12:53:08 open mysqld[3706]:
Aug 16 12:53:08 open mysqld_safe[3708]: ended
Aug 16 12:53:16 open /etc/init.d/mysql[3772]: 0 processes alive and
'/usr/bin/mysqladmin --defaults-file=/etc/mysql/debian.cnf ping' resulted in
Aug 16 12:53:16 open /etc/init.d/mysql[3772]: ^G/usr/bin/mysqladmin:
connect to server at 'localhost' failed
Aug 16 12:53:16 open /etc/init.d/mysql[3772]: error: 'Can't connect to
local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)'
Aug 16 12:53:16 open /etc/init.d/mysql[3772]: Check that mysqld is
running and that the socket: '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' exists!

Local resolution

Commenting out 'old passwords' line in /etc/mysql/my.cnf fixes problem. 
Should there be a postinst routine to do this?
