Dann Frazier suggested to me to try the 2.6.12 kernel image in unstable (linux-image-2.6.12-2) on the system with the Intel 88e8050 Chip NIC.
I did try this kernel and it still did not work. I then pulled the source code from debian unstable (linux-source-2.6.12) and looked at the sources for the sk98lin driver set. As far as I can tell, this is the same revision and source as that on the 2.6.12 source tree from kernel.org. I have also amended an existing bug on the www.kernel.org bugzila (3869) to this effect.
