I'm in a similar situation as the original poster. Bluetooth is reported to be enabled, but there's the red cross in the applet. See http://strlen.de/ukleinek/bluetoothbug.jpg for a screenshot. Obviously I cannot enable it, my "problem" here is, that bluetoothd is not running. (I havn't investigated *why* it's not running yet.) IMHO the bluetooth applet should be able to handle that situation (i.e. no running bluetoothd) more smooth. When I start bluetoothd as root, the cross goes away and the applet becomes usable.
