I'm having similar trouble -- CPU time is exceeds 50% and memory exceeds 25%. Deb package version is 1.9.0.9-13 installed. The xulrunner-stub process has traditionally been a problem for me but I don't believe I was having CPU/memory trouble until I installed swfdec-mozilla.
Linux command "which: returns a path to this: /usr/bin/xul-runner-1.9 and output from file shows the path for the actual file. Comments in the header say this: ## This script is meant to run the mozilla-bin binary from either ## mozilla/xpfe/bootstrap or mozilla/dist/bin. This doesn't make sense to me unless installing swfdec-mozilla changed the symlink from something else. This note appears in a script that I've seen after downloading the bin from the firefox/mozilla site. (As I recall, anyway). Regarding the reply from Mike (set MOZILLA_DISABLE_PLUGINS=1), what does this do? (I'm guessing it isn't doing what it appears to do. The app likely knows if it is running the plug-in, or not.)
