Matt, I just succeeded in doing this [with help from your post].  What worked 
for me was doing your
"expert26/no ata-piix" idea after having changed the BIOS setting for SATA to HCPI [or 
"combo"].

The CDROM gets mounted, and then (during hardware detection) you can *then* load ata_piix--this seems to have worked just fine. I used "combo" in the BIOS, but HCPI should work as well.
