Some one else reported a similar problem and used 'git bisect' to identify that patch, and there certainly are problems with that patch. So I'm still in the dark. Would you be able to try 'git bisect' from git://neil.brown.name/mdadm/ master starting with git bisect start mdadm-3.1.2 mdadm-3.1.1 and see where it gets you?
