this looks ok, but please could you consider passing a string within
DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS, e.g cross-static?

Certainly, I will look into it early next week and see if I can figure
it out how to do this from context within the package and the Debian
policy manual. I just had a quick look at the policy manual, and I
think I understand the way it should work. I'm pretty green on overall
Debian policy, but willing to learn, so any help is greatly appreciated.
